Built to guard the Fords of Isen, Helms Deep was the greatest fortress in the kingdom of Rohan. Formerly known as Aglarond, Helms Deep came to be named after King Helm, who led his people to seek refuge behind its walls during the Long Winter. The stronghold set into the head of a valley against the White Mountains and composed of two main structures: the Deeping Wall and Hornburg. A long causeway swept up from the valley floor to the main gate, over which loomed the great stone tower housing the mighty Horn of Helm Hammerhand. Within the Keep lay the Great Hall, where the king held court in times of siege, and beyond, carved into the mountainside, the stables and entrances to the Glittering Caves.

The valley itself was barred by the Deeping Wall, a curving redoubt twenty feet thick and forty high, strong enough to repel even the ten-thousand strong army of Saruman, but for a single, critical weakness. For beneath the wall the Deeping Stream drained through a low culvert, barely tall enough for a man to stand in, yet vulnerable to the designs of a Wizard Adam Middleton is a Concept Designer at Weta Workshop. He has contributed to a range of projects, such as Pacific Rim: Uprising, Blade Runner 249, Ghost in the Shell, The Great Wall and Altered Carbon.

A few words from Adam about his Helm’s Deep cutaway illustration:

“The inspiration for this print came from combining two of my passions, Lord of the Rings and DK Publishing’s cross-section illustrations.”

“The illustration began with a wealth of research, collecting reference from set photos, images of the shooting miniatures and set plans. I then built an accurate 3D model of the structure in MODO before painting the final illustration in Photoshop.”

“Throughout the process I was fortunate enough to be able to share my process with Alan Lee (the designer of Helm’s Deep as seen in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy) who provided his insights into the construction and layout of the fortress.”
